Senators vote to withhold their own paychecks during government shutdowns

WASHINGTON – Duringfuture government shutdowns, senators willhave their paychecks pausedjust like thousands of other federal employees.

USA TODAY

In a May 14 vote, the Senate resoundingly approved a measure to temporarily pause members' own salaries when funding for one or more agencies lapses because of congressional inaction. The resolution passed basically unanimously by voice vote, with no lawmakers objecting to it.

Even though many senators are already independently wealthy, the legislation's success represented a rare point of bipartisan progress amid ever-worsening Washington gridlock. Over the past year, shutdowns have repeatedly broken records, leavingAmericans unable to travel, criticalservices suspendedand government workers across the country unable to pay their bills.

"I've worked hard to get the votes to pass this," Sen. John Kennedy, a Louisiana Republican who proposed the resolution, said on the Senate floor May 13. "This is about shared sacrifice."

Rank-and-file senators make $174,000 per year. Senate leaders, including the majority and minority leaders, earn $193,400 annually. There are 100 senators in Congress.

Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA) arrives for a vote at the U.S. Capitol Building on April 13, 2026, in Washington.

The measure only needed to pass the Senate and does not require the president's signature. It also does not apply to the House of Representatives' more than 400 members, who also make a base rate of $174,000 per year.

Under Kennedy's legislation, senators would receive back pay after shutdowns end. The resolution will take effect after November's midterm elections.

2026 NFL schedule: A phenomenal slate for Thanksgiving, Black Friday and even Thanksgiving eve

For decades, Thanksgiving has beena huge day for the NFL. And it keeps getting bigger, in terms of adding more days and games to extend the holiday.

Yahoo Sports

The NFL held only two games on Thanksgiving for many years, then in 2006 added a third game in prime time, which has remained a part of the schedule. In 2023, a game on Black Friday was added, and that has stuck as well.

This season, the NFL is expanding the Thanksgiving schedule a bit more. There will be a game on Wednesday, the day before Thanksgiving. That means five games between Wednesday and Friday. Hope you don’t have many family or travel plans, because the games the NFL scheduled are tremendous. On the whole, it’s arguably the best Thanksgiving lineup the NFL has set.

Every game is compelling, from Wednesday through Friday.

Thanksgiving eve: Green Bay Packers at Los Angeles Rams

The NFL pushing this game as a “Thanksgiving eve” game is odd because “Thanksgiving eve” isn’t really a thing. Anyway, it’s another way for the NFL to fill up the calendar, and their first foray into the day before Thanksgiving is a premier matchup. The Rams and Packers are both coming off playoff appearances. The Packers, with Micah Parsons, looked like a Super Bowl contender early last season, the Rams were a Super Bowl contender for most of last season. The NFL usually makes a splash if it introduces a new day on the calendar for games, and it did with this matchup. And it leads into a great tripleheader on Thursday.

Thanksgiving: Chicago Bears at Detroit Lions

As the Lions improved the past few seasons, the calls for them to not host the Thanksgiving opener anymore have subsided. Detroit is now a fantastic draw for the NFL on Thanksgiving. That and atelevision coverage change— allowing networks to swap AFC and NFC games — gives the league some flexibility when it comes to scheduling. The NFL had scheduled divisional games for the Lions each of the last three seasons, and four of the last five. They stuck with that theme this season, giving them a fun matchup against the Bears. That was the matchup for the first game of Thanksgiving in 2024, and the Bears nearly upset the Lions, running out of time at the end in a 23-20 loss. Bears coach Matt Eberflus was fired after a clock management fiasco at the end of the game, leading to Chicago hiring Ben Johnson, who was the Lions’ offensive coordinator in that game.

Thanksgiving: Philadelphia Eagles at Dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys on Thanksgiving is a ratings monster for the NFL. Last season, 57.2 million viewers watched Dallas beat the Kansas City Chiefs. That was themost-watched regular season game in NFL history.

The NFL seems like it wants to break that record. The league could have picked just about any team for this game and got monster ratings, but it chose one of the league’s biggest draws. If the Cowboys improve and are in the NFC East race, this game could surpass last year’s record for viewership. And from a football aspect, it’s an easy sell as long as Dallas is improved.

Thanksgiving night: Kansas City Chiefs at Buffalo Bills

Hope you’re not tired for the night game, because the NFL gave us a great one to cap the day. The Chiefs and Bills have developed a rivalry, with Patrick Mahomes on one side and Josh Allen on the other. The two teams have had some classic games. This one, in the Bills’ new Highmark Stadium, should be another fantastic one. Considering there are four playoff teams from last season on Thanksgiving, and the other two are the Chiefs and Cowboys, on paper this three-game slate might be the best we’ve seen on the NFL’s big holiday.

Black Friday: Denver Broncos at Pittsburgh Steelers

The Black Friday game is no throwaway this season. The Broncos and Steelers both won their divisions last season. There are some questions about whether the Steelers can maintain that, with Mike McCarthy replacing Mike Tomlin at head coach and Aaron Rodgers’ situation in limbo, but it has been a long time since Pittsburgh was bad. And if this is the fifth-best matchup of the three days, we’re doing pretty good.

NBPA releases player ratings of officials and no, Scott Foster isn't in the bottom tier

When it comes to NBA officials and the referees/umpires of other sports, the general rule of thumb is that fans knowing your name isn’t a good thing. That made the results of the National Basketball Players Association survey interesting.

Yahoo Sports

The union publicly released the findings of its 2025-26 Referee Player Survey on Wednesday, with 411 players across all 30 teams rating the league’s collection of officials. All 73 refs were graded on a scale of 1 to 5.

The ratings were reportedly shared with the NBA league office in March and are presented as the official player recommendations for referee assignments for the 2026 NBA Playoffs.

The NBPA broke down the officials into three tiers, requesting that only Tier 1 and Tier 2 officials work the playoffs and only Tier 1 officials work the NBA Finals. Here are the groups:

Tier 1: Elite & Top Performers

Ray Acosta, Brent Barnaky, Curtis Blair, Tony Brothers, Nick Buchert, John Butler, James Capers, Kevin Cutler, Eric Dalen, Marc Davis, JB DeRosa, Mitchell Ervin, Jacyn Goble, Nate Green, Bill Kennedy, Courtney Kirkland, Karl Lane, Mark Lindsay, Tre Maddox, Ed Malloy, Phenizee Ransom, Dedric Taylor, Josh Tiven, James Williams, Sean Wright, Zach Zarba

Tier 2: Solid Performers

Brandon Adair, Derrick Collins, Sean Corbin, Mousa Dagher, Brian Forte, Scott Foster, Pat Fraher, Jason Goldenberg, David Guthrie, Matt Kallio, Marat Kogut, Sha'Rae Mitchell, Ashley Moyer-Gleich, Matt Myers, Andy Nagy, Brett Nansel, JT Orr, Gediminas Petraitis, JD Ralls, Kevin Scott, Aaron Smith, Jonathan Sterling, Ben Taylor, Scott Twardoski, Justin Van Duyne, CJ Washington, Leon Wood

Tier 3: Needs Improvement

Dannica Baroody, John Conley, Che Flores, Tyler Ford, John Goble, Robert Hussey, Intae Hwang, Simone Jelks, Biniam Maru, Suyash Mehta, Rodney Mott, Pat O'Connell, Jenna Reneau, Tyler Ricks, Natalie Sago, Jenna Schroeder, Brandon Schwab, Danielle Scott, Evan Scott, Michael Smith

The NBPA also shared that Zach Zarba was ranked as the No. 1 ref overall in the NBA, with players from every team ranking him at least among the Top 12. Kevin Cutler also ranked highly, getting a No. 1 ranking from six different teams.

From the NBPA:

“I think officiating comes down to the person. I don’t think you can reform the calls themselves — people are human and they’re going to make mistakes,” said NBPA First Vice President Grant Williams at the State of the Game roundtable. “But the best officials in the league, according to the players, are the great communicators; the ones who understand when they’ve made a mistake. As long as you’re calling a game consistently, guys are willing to adapt. It’s about having control of the game while also respecting the players and their different personalities.”

The highest standard deviation belongs to perhaps the most maligned official in the NBA, Scott Foster. He was reportedly ranked as the top official by one team and had enough support to land in Tier 2.

Those results are somewhat at odds given Foster’s reputation, with his namecomingupmorethana fewtimesover the years. His feud with the recently retired Chris Paul was part of NBA lore, and his “The Extender” nickname is well-known enough to receivea 4,000-word Reddit analysis last year.

But more than a few players think he’s somewhere between OK and good. There are also a pair of Tier 1 officials who have had their own recent incidents, withTony Brothers getting called “completely unprofessional” by Timberwolves head coach Chris FinchandDevin Booker going after James Williams enough to get fined $35,000.

One other notable trend in the ratings is the fact that no women are in Tier 1 and only two — Sha’Rae Mitchell and Ashley Moyer-Gleich — are in Tier 2, compared to six in Tier 3. Che Flores, who is non-binary, is also in Tier 3. The NBPA partially addressed that, noting Moyer-Gleich and Mitchell reached Tier 2 because they “both received positive feedback from the players regarding improvement in their overall performance.”

Trump’s gold phone comes with stunning new terms and conditions - including no guarantee of its release

Despite already accepting deposits for PresidentDonald Trump’s gold-plated“T1” smartphone, originally expected to launch in August 2025 but now delayed multiple times, updated preorder terms make it clear there is no guarantee the device will ever be released.

The Independent US

“A preorder deposit provides only a conditional opportunity if Trump Mobile later elects, in its sole discretion, to offer the Device for sale,” Trump Mobile, co-founded byDonald Trump Jr.andEric Trump, says on itspreorder terms pageabout the $100 deposit.

“A deposit is not a purchase, does not constitute acceptance of an order, does not create a contract for sale, does not transfer ownership or title interest, does not allocate or reserve specific inventory, and does not guarantee that a Device will be produced or made available for purchase,” it continues.

The fine print adds that the $100 deposit is nonbinding and does not reserve a phone, secure the $499 promotional price, or guarantee any features, specs, release date or inventory, despite the website urging customers in the lefthand cormer to “lock in” the deal.

“The deposit does not lock in pricing, promotions, service plans, taxes, fees, shipping costs or other commercial terms. Final pricing and offers will be disclosed at the time of purchase, and you will have the opportunity to accept or reject the final terms before completing your purchase. Pricing and promotional terms may change any time prior to purchase,” the site states.

Trump Mobile says the $100 deposit does not reserve or purchase a phone, but only gives customers a chance to buy one later if it is eventually released (Trump Mobile)

“Any applicable taxes will be calculated at the time of final sale and may vary based on shipping location and then-current tax laws. Any prior advertising, marketing materials, product renderings, feature descriptions, or estimated timelines are informational only and do not constitute binding representations, warranties or guarantees,” the website reads.

Instead, Trump Mobile says the final price will only be confirmed later, at the time of purchase. At that point, customers would be able to decide whether to proceed with the sale or walk away, and even then, pricing and promotional terms could still change before checkout.

The Independenthas contacted Trump Mobile and The Trump Organization for comment.

The T1 Phone was first unveiled as the flagship device for Trump Mobile, with an initial expected launch date of August 2025. However, uncertainty remains about demand and production. One estimate cited by theInternational Business Timessuggested as many as 600,000 people may have placeddeposits.

Even if the phone does move forward, the company outlines multiple conditions that must be met before a sale is finalized.

“(1) Trump Mobile makes the Device available for sale; (2) you complete checkout; (3) you submit full payment; and (4) Trump Mobile accepts and successfully processes payment. Until those conditions are satisfied, no enforceable agreement for purchase exists, “ the website states.

The shifting terms come amid ongoing controversy and repeated delays surrounding the Trump-branded phone. Last month, Trump Mobile unveiled a redesigned “T1” with a more conventional vertical camera layout, replacing the original triangular design.

“Made in the USA” claims have since been walked back, with broader language now claiming the T1 is “designed with American values” and supported by “American teams.”

In January, a group of Democratic senators led by Elizabeth Warren urged the Federal Trade Commission toinvestigate Trump Mobileover concerns about potentially misleading marketing tied to prepaid deposits and questions about whether the phone is actually made in the U.S.
