Pirates tie MLB record with 7 straight walks vs. Reds

Have you ever been to a Little League game where some poor kid can’t find the strike zone and the other team knows it? The Pittsburgh Pirates and Cincinnati Reds just gave us the major league version of that.

Yahoo Sports

The Pirates tied an MLB record on Saturday by drawing walks in seven straight plate appearances, turning what was previously a 5-3 lead into a laugher. The two pitchers responsible: starter Rhett Lowder and reliever Connor Phillips.

The strike zone carnage came in the second inning, after the Pirates had already gone through their entire order in a five-run first inning. Leadoff hitter Oneil Cruz struck out looking, then the 2-8 batters in the Pittsburgh lineup all drew walks, with Phillips replacing Lowder after three walks, then walking in four runners himself.

The Pirates pulled Phillips after that and replaced him with Sam Moll, who didn’t walk Henry Davis, but did allow another run in on a fielder’s choice grounder from Henry Davis. Cruz then grounded out to end the inning, making him responsible for two of the three outs.

It was 10-3 Pirates at the end of the inning, with five runs scored on zero hits. Please enjoy a supercut of all seven walks, featuring a Pirates broadcast falling further into disbelief with each ball.

And if you’re curious what all of that looks like from a pitch perspective: ball, strike, ball, foul, ball, ball strike, foul, ball, ball, ball, ball, ball, ball, ball, ball, ball, ball, ball, strike, ball, strike, ball, ball, ball, ball, ball, ball, ball, strike, foul, ball, foul, ball, ball, ball.

Only two other teams have yielded seven straight walks in MLB history. The last one to do it is the Pirates, who did it against the Atlanta Braves in 1983per Dan Zangrilli of 93.7 The Fan. The other team do it wasthe Chicago White Sox in 1909.

5-star DL Marcus Fakatou names Oregon among five finalists

April was an incredible month for theOregon Duckson the recruiting trail. TheDuckspicked up six commitments in the month leading up to the spring game, including a pledge from five-star quarterbackWill Mencl. After building more momentum with a successful visit with a handful of recruits at the spring game, Oregon has its eyes on another five-star prospect.

USA TODAY

Marcus Fakatou, the No. 27 overall player in the Rivals Industry Rankings, cut his recruitment down to just five schools: Oregon, Notre Dame, Texas, Ohio State and Georgia. The Sierra Canyon star is the No. 2 defensive lineman in the 2027 class and has the size to play inside and the length to play on the edge.

Oregon hosted Fakatou for an unofficial visit in March that ended with the No. 3 player in California feeling like the Ducks were a leader in the race. However, Fakatou's hierarchy in his recruitment has changed with each visit, and it could come down to who gets the last say.

Fakatou told Rivals' Greg Biggins that Ohio State is his current leader, with Notre Dame and Georgia closely following. After an unofficial visit to South Bend last week, Fakatou locked in an official visit to Notre Dame on June 15, just three days after he is scheduled to be in Eugene for his official visit with the Ducks.

The 6-foot-7, 275-pound monster on the edge will come to Eugene in June alongside his Sierra Canyon teammate, four-star defensive linemanKasi Currie, who was present for Oregon's spring game. The Ducks are in a good position to land Currie, and they could attempt to sway the duo to take their partnership to Autzen Stadium for the future.

The Ducks have committed a significant amount of resources to their defensive line so far in the2027 recruiting cycle. Four-star defensive linemen Zane Rowe and Cam Pritchett have already shut down their recruitments, locking in with the Ducks, while Oregon earned a pledge from four-star edge rusher Rashad Streets last month.

While Oregon might be on the back burner within Fakatou's top five, this recruitment has evolved quickly after each visit. The Ducks have some work to do, but they could leap to the front by getting him on campus as much as possible, starting with his official visit.

Evenly-matched Canadiens, Lightning reach deciding Game 7

With how even the teams are and how close their head-to-head showdown has been, it is appropriate the Tampa Bay Lightning will play host to the Montreal Canadiens on Sunday in a Game 7 of their Eastern Conference first-round Stanley Cup playoff series.

Field Level Media

After both clubs finished the regular season with 106 points, the Lightning and Canadiens have both scored the same number of goals (14), both won twice in overtime and both won two of three road games in the first six instalments of the series.

"I'm 14 years in the league and I've been in a number of Game 7s. Some that I can be man enough today to say we weren't as good as the other team and some we were as good as the other team," Lightning coach Jon Cooper said. "This one here ... it's so even, special teams, goaltending, everything. To win this, you've got to have a special game against the other team."

The winner will face the Buffalo Sabres in the next round.

The teams face a challenging encore after a thrilling 1-0 Lightning victory in overtime of Game 6. Both goaltenders were sensational while the clubs traded scoring chances before Tampa's Gage Goncalves scored his first career playoff overtime winner.

Now, a new chapter beckons. Not only does Tampa Bay have home-ice advantage, but also the upper-hand with its experience. Many core Lightning players have won multiple Stanley Cup titles, including the 2021 championship when the Lightning beat the Canadiens in the Final.

"This is what we all dream about," Lightning forward Jake Guentzel said. "I'm fortunate to have played in a couple and there's nothing better. Especially at home, it's going to be an electric atmosphere. I can't wait."

The Canadiens, who went through a rebuild right after that run to the final, boast a more youthful lineup, and one that headed into the season knowing a brighter future for the franchise is still ahead.

However, after pushing the Eastern Conference first-round series to the distance, the attitude has become about making a mark now. All six games have been decided by one goal as the Canadiens have shown they are worthy opponents for the more-heralded Lightning.

"We're not here for a ribbon. We want to move on," coach Martin St. Louis said on Saturday before his team headed to Florida. "We worked to get to this spot. Playing Tampa in the first round, you know you're gonna need everything and we've delivered that. It's a good spot to be in. I think the guys have enjoyed the process and are hungry to keep moving forward."

A major task for the Canadiens will be regrouping. Montreal was staring at a golden chance to advance but could not find the winning goal.

Even in overtime, the Canadiens failed to convert on a power play just before the winner. Turning the page, instead of spending time think of a missed opportunity, will be a big key.

"It's hard to close out a series. I've never been in this position. A lot of guys haven't been in this position," said Montreal defenseman Lane Hutson. "It would have been cool to do it at home, but we have another chance to do it in Tampa."

The horse charged down the stretch to make history for trainer Cherie DeVaux. Renegade was second and long shot Ocelli third.

DeVaux is just the second female trainer to win any Triple Crown race after Jena Antonucci with Arcangelo in the 2023 Belmont Stakes. She won the Derby in her first opportunity, eight years since starting her own stable.

During the week, DeVaux shifted from downplaying what it would mean to be the first woman to train a Derby winner to understanding she's a role model to girls who might want to follow in her footsteps someday. She's just the 18th woman to saddle a horse in the Kentucky Derby.

Jockey Jose Ortiz showed off the riding prowess that has made him so successful at Churchill Downs in recent days to win the Derby for the first time in his 11th try. He beat brother Irad, who rode Renegade, to that accomplishment.

The race went on with just 18 horses after Great White was a late scratch for flipping and throwing his jockey.

According toCBS Sports, the Derby this year has a total purse of $5 million, with the winner taking home $3.1 million. The owner usually take 80% of the winnings, with the jockey and trainer splitting the remaining 20%, according to CBS Sports.

The Kentucky Derby is the first leg of the vaunted Triple Crown, which includes the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes. The last Triple Crown winnerwas Justify in 2018.

This is a breaking news story and will be updated.
