GOP Sen. Cassidy fights to hold onto seat in Louisiana primary

Washington — Louisianans are voting Saturday in the state's Senate primaries as Sen. Bill Cassidy fights to hold onto his seat.

CBS News

A handful of Republicans are facing off Saturday in a competitive primary to win the GOP nomination as Cassidy — a Republican who has occasionally broken with his party — seeks a third term in the Senate.

Cassidy, 68, was one of seven Senate Republicans who voted to convict Mr. Trump in his impeachment trial after the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol in 2021. And although he's emphasized his cooperation with the administration in recent years, the presidentendorsedRep. Julia Letlow in January, encouraging her tochallenge Cassidyfor the seat.

Letlow, 45, became the first Republican woman elected to represent Louisiana in Congress in 2021 after winning a special election for Louisiana's 5th Congressional District following the death of her husband, who died in 2020 from complications related to COVID-19 before he could be sworn into office. She's hammered Cassidy as disloyal to the GOP, claiming Louisiana "shouldn't have to wonder how our senator will vote when the pressure's on."

In addition to his vote to impeach Mr. Trump, Cassidy has been at odds with the administration over Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s leadership, despite delivering the key vote to advance Kennedy's nomination last year. Cassidy, a medical doctor, has broken with the HHS secretary on multiple occasions, including slamming a change to the hepatitis B vaccine schedule for infants and calling for the postponement of key vaccine advisory panel meetings.

While Letlow has accused Cassidy of not being sufficiently conservative, Cassidy has claimed the same about his Trump-backed opponent, pointing to comments she made in 2020 supporting DEI programs in education. And the feuding between the two candidates has appeared to create an opportunity for another Republican — state Treasurer John Fleming, who previously represented Louisiana in the House and worked in the first Trump administration.

If no candidate receives a simple majority, the top two vote-getters will go to a runoff on June 27. An Emerson College poll from Aprilindicatesthat the outcome is likely.

The contest will likely be viewed as a test of the president's influence. Earlier this month, Mr. Trump's gambit to push Republicans out of the state Senate in Indiana who defied his redistricting efforts was largely successful. Whether the same is true in Louisiana remains to be seen.

Mr. Trump slammed Cassidyon Truth Social on Saturday morning, calling the senator a "disloyal disaster" and criticizing his impeachment vote. Mr. Trump encouraged voters to support Letlow, calling her "a winner who will NEVER let you down."

Meanwhile, the Senate Republicans' campaign arm, the National Republican Senatorial Committee, has supported Cassidy. Senate Majority Leader John Thune told reporters Thursday that "Bill Cassidy has been a terrific senator for Louisiana."

"Tim Scott and I at the NRSC, our job is to do what we can to support incumbents," Thune said. "But obviously the voters of Louisiana are going to make that decision."

On the Democratic side, Nick Albares, a former policy advisor to Gov. John Bel Edwards, Navy veteran Gary Crockett and third-generation farmer Jamie Davis are facing off for their party's nomination. But Louisiana is a solidly red state, where Mr. Trump won 60% of the vote in 2024. And the state last elected a Democrat to the Senate in 2008, making the winner of the GOP primary likely to face a glidepath to the Senate in November's general election.

Louisiana's Republican Gov. Jeff Landrysuspended the state's House primariesin the wake of the Supreme Court decision to strike down the state's congressional map earlier this month, while other races, including the Senate primaries, were set to go on as planned.

Sherman Lewis, who won four Super Bowl championships as NFL assistant, dies at 83

Sherman Lewis, who won four Super Bowl championships as an assistant coach, died on Friday at 83 years old. His death was confirmed by Michigan State University, where Lewis was an All-American running back in 1963.

Yahoo Sports

Lewis was the running backs coach for the San Francisco 49ers under head coach Bill Walsh for nine seasons and won Super Bowl titles during the 1984, 1988 and 1989 seasons. He went on to become the offensive coordinator for the Green Bay Packers on Mike Holmgren’s staff for eight seasons, winning another championship in 1996.

Despite that success, Lewis was never hired as a head coach in the NFL. He interviewed for several openings and was endorsed for such jobs by Holmgren. At the time Lewis appeared to be a strong candidate for head-coaching positions, the NFL had not yet adopted the Rooney Rule that required teams to interview at least one minority candidate for head-coach openings. That mandate was implemented in 2002.

"We won Super Bowls in San Francisco and one in Green Bay,"Lewis told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel in 2015. "And I got to work with some great coaches and players.”

"No question I wished I had the chance to be a head coach,” he continued. “But looking back, I did all I could. I was disappointed, but I'm not going to hang my hat on that. I had a great career and was fortunate to coach in the NFL."

After his tenure in Green Bay, Lewis had two offensive coordinator stints with the Minnesota Vikings (from 2000-01) and Detroit Lions (2003-04). His final NFL coaching job was as an offensive assistant with the Washington Commanders in 2009.

At Michigan State, Lewis rushed for 1,566 yards and 16 touchdowns in three seasons, and was named a team captain. In addition to earning All-American honors in 1963, he finished third in the Heisman Trophy voting to Navy’s Roger Staubach and Georgia Tech’s Billy Lothridge.

Lewis was also an accomplished track and field star for the Spartans, winning Big Ten championships in the long jump and 300-yard dash.

Following his collegiate career in East Lansing, Lewis played two seasons in the Canadian Football League for the Toronto Argonauts and Saskatchewan Roughriders. He also played two seasons for the New York Jets when they were in the AFL.

Before moving on to the NFL, Lewis was an assistant coach for his alma mater for 14 years. He was inducted intothe Michigan State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2001.

CHICAGO — The impact of the2026 NBA Draft Scouting Combineon the actual draft is an annual debate.

USA TODAY

After years of evaluating players during high school, grassroots and college basketball games,NBA teams gathered in Chicago this weekto conduct medical exams and put the best draft prospects in the world through measurements, agility testing, shooting drills and scrimmages. Hundreds of front office executives were at Wintrust Arena, and inevitably a few draft narratives emerged along with the wingspans, vertical jumps and medical reports.

The early speculation is the top-four players in this class are set but the order in which they'll be selected remains up for grabs during the pre-draft process. There's also a promising group of guards projected as the next best available prospects, so much so there could be promising wings and big men capable of jumping into the top-10 and late lottery picks. The late first round outlook could change in the coming weeks, with several players poised to return to collegedue lucrative NIL opportunities.

Trump approval sinks as costs rise, poll finds

With less than six months until the midterm elections, PresidentDonald Trumpis facing record disapproval on the economy and healthcare, according to anew CNN/SSRS poll, as concerns about rising costs continue to weigh on voters.

USA TODAY

The survey, conducted April 30 to May 4, found 77% of Americans say Trump’s policies have increased the cost of living in their communities, while about two-thirds say those policies have worsened economic conditions nationwide. The results also show Trump’s approval on the economy at a low point and his healthcare disapproval at a record high.

The findings come asTrump has emphasized foreign policy prioritiesover domestic economic concerns. Asked about rising gas prices on May 12, the president said his focus was on preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.

“I don’t think about Americans’ financial situation. I don’t think about anybody. I think about one thing. We cannot let Iran have a nuclear weapon. That’s all,” Trump said.

The poll surveyed 1,499 U.S. adults and has a margin of error of ±2.8 percentage points.

Dodgers LHP Blake Snell (elbow) scratched from start, placed on IL

Dodgers left-hander Blake Snell was scratched from his Friday start hours before the opener of the Freeway Series against the Angels in Anaheim and placed on the 15-day injured list.

Field Level Media

The Dodgers said the 33-year-old Snell was scratched due to loose bodies in his left elbow.

The IL move is retroactive to Tuesday.

The Dodgers are now listing right-hander Will Klein (1-2, 2.76 ERA) to be the first pitcher in what will be a bullpen game.

The contest was slated to be Snell's second appearance of the season. His season got off to a late start due to shoulder issues and he made his season debut last Saturday against the Atlanta Braves.

Snell struggled against the Braves as he allowed five runs (four earned) and six hits while throwing 77 pitches in just three innings. He struck out five and walked two while taking the loss.

The two-time Cy Young Award winner was limited to 11 starts last season due to a shoulder injury and went 5-4 with a 2.35 ERA in his first season with the Dodgers. In the postseason, he went 3-2 with a 3.18 ERA in six appearances (five starts) to help the Dodgers win the World Series.

Snell is 81-63 with a 3.17 ERA in 223 career starts over 11 major league seasons with the Tampa Bay Rays (2016-20), San Diego Padres (2021-23), San Francisco Giants (2024) and Dodgers.

Snell won the American League Cy Young with the Rays in 2018 and took National League honors in 2023 for the Padres.

Los Angeles recalled left-hander Charlie Barnes in a corresponding move. Barnes, 30, hasn't appeared in a game for the Dodgers since being claimed off waivers from the Chicago Cubs last Saturday. He gave up four runs (three earned) in three innings in his one outing for the Cubs.
