Firefighters are used to responding to emergencies, but a recent rescue in Austin, Texas, involved a very unusual call for help.
When a raccoon got its head stuck in the hollow of a tree, a concerned neighbor called 911. Firefighters arrived with ladders and equipment to free the trapped animal, and video of the rescue shows just how tricky the situation had become.
But while the firefighters successfully freed the raccoon, the footage left some viewers fearing the worst.
According to the Austin Firefighters Association, crews used quick thinking, ladders and the tools they carry on the job to free the animal.
“This rescue is a great example of what makes Austin firefighters such an important part of our community,” the association wrote in an Instagram post documenting the rescue. “The job goes beyond fighting fires and responding to emergencies.”
While the firefighters managed to free the raccoon, viewers noticed something concerning about the footage: The animal appeared limp and motionless as it was lowered from the tree.
“Did he die? He isn’t moving when he got freed. Please confirm he lived?” one concerned Instagram user commented.
Another viewer praised the rescue but wondered what happened afterward, writing, “Great job! Did y’all release him, or did he go to a wildlife rehab for observation and an exam?”
Fortunately, the Austin Firefighters Association had some reassuring news to share.
“Raccoon rescue update: He’s OK!” the organization announced in a follow-up Instagram post.
“Although the video may make it look like the raccoon is unconscious or has passed away when crews free him and lower him to the ground using a tool called a catch pole, we’re happy to report that he was alive and unharmed!”
The association explained that the raccoon had likely endured a stressful ordeal before firefighters arrived.
“After what we can only imagine was a long, stressful struggle with his head stuck in the tree, our little friend was understandably tired,” the organization wrote. “But when firefighters handed him over to Animal Control, he was OK!”
The reassuring update was welcome news to viewers who had been worried about the animal.
“Yay! Thank y’all again for helping him,” one Instagram user commented.
Another simply wrote, “Thank you for the update!”
While the association didn’t share additional details about what happened to the raccoon after Animal Control took over, it was happy to report that the rescue had a positive outcome.
“We’re glad this rescue had a happy ending!” the organization concluded.
