United Airlines passengers evacuated after possible engine fire

Passengers were forced to evacuate a United Airlines flight at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on Monday, March 2, after the plane experienced an issue with one of its engines.

The Los Angeles Fire Department told thelocal ABC affiliatethat the issue was a possible fire.

Video posted to social media appeared to show smoke coming from the plane's left engine as passengers evacuated down emergency slides and onto the tarmac.

United Airlines confirmed that passengers had evacuated in a statement to USA TODAY.

"United flight 2127 safely returned to Los Angeles to address an issue with one of the engines. Customers deplaned via slides and airstairs and were bused to the terminal. There are no reported injuries at this time. We're working to get our customers to their final destinations," the statement said.

According to the airline, the flight had just departed LAX and was scheduled to fly to Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey. It was operated by a Boeing 787 and there were 256 passengers and 12 crewmembers onboard.

The Federal Aviation Administration said it would investigate the incident.
